Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has said that his company will not rest its e-book hopes entirely on the Kindle, and will explore new formats.
Bezos said at the Disruptive by Design conference that the company will keep the Kindle business separate from the larger e-book store, which offers titles for the Kindle and third-party hardware such as the Apple iPhone.
"The device team has the job of making the most remarkable purpose-built reading device in the world," he said. "We are going to give the device team competition."
Amazon has been looking to expand the reach of the Kindle and its e-book business in recent months. The company unveiled the larger Kindle DX in May, along with a plan to offer a wider range of items, such as newspapers and magazines.
Other markets for e-books and reader devices, such as textbook distribution, are also being examined by governments and universities.
