In a statement this week, BASDA confirmed its support of the Electronic Business XML initiative, a joint effort of the United Nations and non-profit consortium OASIS. ebXML is an initiative aimed at establishing a global technical framework that enables consistency in the exchange of all electronic business data, cutting down on retyping time and costs. BASDA has joined with more than 120 representatives from software organisations around the world. It described the initiative as very important and said it will have a significant effect on the development of e-commerce throughout the world. Dennis Keeling, chief executive of BASDA, said: 'BASDA was invited to demonstrate its groundbreaking eBIS-XML initiative to the first meeting of the Electronic Business XML working group which took place in November. 'We were able to demonstrate the first many-to-many electronic document interface which enables an electronic message to be sent as an e-mail attachment and viewed either as a purchase order or invoice document, or read directly into an accounting system, without any re-keying,' he said. Ray Walker, chair of the UN/CEFACT, the UN body involved, said: 'The primary objective of ebXML is to lower the barrier of entry to electronic business in order to facilitate trade, particularly with respect to SMEs and developing nations.'
