BASDA puts its weight behind drive for easier electronic transactions

Accountancy software trade body BASDA has given its support to a UN-supported initiative aimed at helping the development of e-commerce worldwide.

In a statement, BASDA confirmed its support of the Electronic Business XMLInitiative (ebXML), a joint effort of the United Nations CEFACTand OASIS.

ebXML is an open, vendor-neutral initiative to establish a global technical and semantic framework that will enable XML to be utilized in a consistent manner for the exchange of all electronic business data.

OASIS is a non-profit, international consortium dedicated to product-independent data and content interchange.

UN/CEFACT is a United Nations body whose mandate covers worldwide policy and technical development in the area of trade facilitation and electronic business.

BASDA joined with more than 120 representatives from organizations as varied as ACORD, Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12, AIA, Ariba, Commerce One,DataChannel, DISA,, EDIFACT, GCA, IBM, Microsoft, OMGOAG, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, SWIFT and others to launch the ebXML initiative.

BASDA describes the initiative as very important and says it will have a significant effect on the development of e-commerce throughout the world.

'BASDA was invited to demonstrate its groundbreaking eBIS-XMLinitiative to the first meeting of the Electronic Business XMLWorking Group which took place in November,' explained DennisKeeling, chief executive of BASDA.

'We were able to demonstratethe first many-to-many electronic document interface whichenables an electronic message to be sent as an eMail attachmentand viewed either as a purchase order or invoice document, orread directly into an accounting system, without any re-keying,' he said.

Ray Walker, chair of the UN/CEFACT, said: 'The primary objective of ebXML is to lower the barrier of entry to electronic business in order to facilitate trade, particularly with respect to SMEs and developing nations.'
