Internet portal Lycos has bought a leading MP3 player manufacturer in a bid to differentiate itself from competitors by focusing on providing audio services online.

The acquisition of Internet Music Distribution, the makers of the Sonique MP3 handheld player, is the latest move by Lycos into online music. In February it launched MP3 Search to ease Web searches for visitors looking music in the popular format, while in April it launched the Lycos Radio Network.
