US vendor Peek has shipped a new device dedicated to accessing the Twitter micro-blogging service while on the move.

The company said that the new TwitterPeek handset allows users to access Twitter throughout the US without the need for a Wi-Fi or network internet connection.

The TwitterPeek uses existing mobile data networks to send and receive Twitter data, and allows users to perform common operations such as posting tweets and messages and managing follower lists.

The device is being offered through Amazon at $99 (£60). The price includes free data for six months, after which users will pay a $7.95 (£4.80) monthly fee. Alternatively, customers can pay $199 (£120) which includes free data for the life of the device.

Peek hopes that the handset will appeal to users who want to access Twitter without requiring a smartphone or PC.

"Twitter is so much more interesting when you can tweet and reply to conversations as they happen, in real time, not from behind a PC," the company said in a blog post.

"TwitterPeek is designed to make it affordable for people of all ages and walks of life to take the world of Twitter with them wherever they go."
