Open-source software specialist Red Hat has released a new server virtualisation platform.

The company said that Enterprise Virtualization for Servers will allow organisations to better implement and manage server virtualisation setups, and let administrators manage virtualised server deployments based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform.

The new platform will include Red Hat's standalone Virtualisation Hypervisor system, as well as a Virtualisation Manager tool designed to help administrators manage multiple virtualised server setups.

The server tool is seen as the second piece in Red Hat's virtualisation strategy. The platform is designed to connect with the September release of the Enterprise Linux 5.4 operating system, which supports the kernel-based virtual machine system.

"Red Hat Enterprise Virtualisation is differentiated from other virtualisation solutions because it inherits the powerful functionality, hardware support and certification of Red Hat Enterprise Linux," said Paul Cormier, president of products and technologies at Red Hat.

"We believe that Red Hat Enterprise Virtualisation, especially the management components, will allow customers to use virtualisation pervasively."
