Google suffers yet another outage

Blogger service goes down for over an hour

Web giant Google has suffered yet another outage on one of its most popular services, this time the Blogger publishing platform.

Brief messages on the Blogger Status site and Blogger Help Forum suggest that the service went down for around 90 minutes between 7.30am and 9am BST on 23 October, so it is unlikely to have affected many users.

A simple message posted on the Blogger Status site at 1.07am PDT (9.07am BST) reads: 'Blogger was unavailable for most users for over an hour. Service has now been restored.'

Millions of individuals and businesses use Blogger to manage and publish blogs, and the outage will be yet another embarrassment for Google, which has been trying to convince users of the stability of its cloud-based service delivery systems.

"Users were unable to access their Blogger accounts, and some people had trouble viewing others' blogs. We worked quickly to address and fix the issue, and we apologise for any inconvenience to our users," a Google spokesman told research firm IDG.

Google will be hoping that outages such as this remain few and far between, as it seeks to push into the enterprise market with its Google Apps online applications.

Pest control firm Rentokil recently announced plans to roll out the service to its 35,000 employees by next year, while Portsmouth University is set to do the same for its 30,000 students.

Large scale outages, however infrequent, continue to plague Google. The most recent was in September when Gmail users were unable to access the webmail service for over 90 minutes.
