EMC updates Data Domain duplication systems

New offerings aimed at mid-sized enterprises

EMC has announced three upgrades to the data duplication suites offered by recent purchase Data Domain.

Data Domain systems search through backup files and eliminate duplication. The field is increasingly important as IT managers look to cut down on the amount of space taken up by archives, and speed up the backup process.

EMC has replaced three product lines, the DD120, DD510 and DD530, with the more advanced DD140, DD610 and DD630 versions.

The entry-level DD120 system has been replaced by the D140, doubling the storage capacity and offering a 50 per cent increase in aggregate backup.

The DD630 and DD610 appliances offer up to 1.1TB/hour and 675GB/hour of inline deduplicated storage throughput, which EMC estimates would cut backup time in half, and have a logical capacity of 420Tb and 195TB respectively.

"Data Domain has already demonstrated that there is a considerable appetite for deduplication across organisations of all sizes. We are seeing deduplication increasingly being embraced by companies looking to implement tapeless disaster recovery at the edge by pulling in data from remote offices to a datacentre core," said Henry Baltazar, a storage analyst at The 451 Group.

"With its latest Data Domain product refresh, EMC has demonstrated again how its systems offer scalability in performance and capacity by leveraging the incremental improvements of commodity processor technologies."
