Revenue sources confirmed that the interviews took place ð but could not provide a date for the announcement. The 'understanding' is that Brown wants the board in place as soon as possible.

Speaking at a Treasury sub-committee meeting on Wednesday last week, Gus O'Donnell, permanent secretary to the Treasury, said that the 'process is in hand as we speak' and confirmed plans to advertise for a chief information officer would go ahead.

Over the weekend applications for the CIO position was advertised in the Sunday Times

Executive chairman of the new organisation is one of the public sector's most prestigious and challenging jobs ð but the likely remuneration of around £150,000 is only a fraction of what can be earned in the private sector.

But such a job would almost guarantee a knighthood.
