It is likely to be a particularly unpleasant experience for Sir Nick, with the Revenue already under fire because of the delays and hold-up surrounding the payment of child tax credits.

Sir Nick will have to explain how the Revenue failed to remind as many as 13 million people that they are not paying enough towards their state pensions, an error which goes back over a period of six years.

This means that millions of workers, many of whom may now be retired, will now have to pay top-up fees to safeguard their pensions. An estimated 200,000 face having to pay as much as £1,500 to hold onto the £77.45 weekly benefit.
